The process

How it
Works
Carefully selected wood is harvested. The bark is removed.
The wood is then processed into a fine chip
Assisted by heat, steam, pressure and enzymes, our licensed Futuration™ process digests the tree into its original building blocks: lignin, cellulose and hemicellulose.
Our licensed Valority™ process then optimises each of the three fractions: lignin, cellulose and hemicellulose into specialty grades of useful materials to be utilised within your process and products as described below.

Products

Lignins are the second most abundant chemical within a tree after cellulose. Lignin supports and sticks the cellulose within a tree and has unique waterproofing, water-adsorption, anti-microbial and UV resistant properties. Lignin is what makes wood brown and why paper is white when the lignin is removed.

NFCs are a cellulose fibre extracted from trees. Within a tree, cellulose provides the structure and strength to allow trees to stand tall. NFCs are very small (nano scale) materials which are strong, flexible and can absorb large amounts of water.

PHAs are a family of polymers commonly produced by microbes which makes them natural like wool, cotton or hemp. These microbes eat the sugars from trees to make PHA, which can be used to produce films, sheets and finished goods to replace traditional plastics. This material can be eaten by microbes, which makes it biodegradable in the sea, soil and water.

Futuration™

The Futuration™ process separates the lignin into a pure and high quality form to enable the efficient conversion of lignin to high performing and valuable product grades.

Valority™

The Valority™ process uses latest biotechnological processes to convert the high purity lignin from the Futuration™ process to produce high performing product grades which can be used in applications such as:

About

Futurity are in the process of establishing New Zealand's first advanced commercial biorefinery in Tairāwhiti-Gisborne. This plant will be the first of a number of biorefineries to be constructed around New Zealand.

Our success to date is enabled by close support from leading international technology partners, as well as GLOBALEAGLE, Trust Tairāwhiti, Temple Investment, Scion Research, Callaghan Innovation, Ministry of Business Innovation and Employment, and a range of active product and supply chain development projects with international and domestic businesses. Together we will replace oil based materials with trees.
